ok something strange has happened to my uno mia , she feels really light on the highways and it takes alot less effort to turn the steering wheel to full lock but the car doesnt turn as well as before, is there any way to increase the speed at which the wheels turn from left to right ?

recently replaced :

steering rack
tie rods
shocks

there is also a slight knock coming from the front when going over speed humps
suspects : cv joints + ball joints ? i can replace them both at the same time.

the reason i had to replace all this is because in December we were driving near camper down in kzn and there was this speedhump WITHOUT ANY LINES ON IT , so i hit the speedhump at almost 50kmph :bang::bang::cry:(n)

sitting with one slightly bent rim , busted steering rack + tie rods and more ! SIGH

Have you had the tracking and alignment checked since you have changed all these parts?

yeah that has been checked, how many times does it take to turn the steering wheel into full lock normally ?

are you compareing the steering with another uno or just with your previous state? maybe just now it's like it should be. even without powersteering my uno is pretty easy to steer.

I think a normal uno is 4 turns lock to lock and the uno turbo quick rack is 3.4 turns lock to lock.

ok ill re-check tonight how many times it needs to turn as im pretty sure its feeling like 3 turns or atleast around there. i dont want to turn the wheels while the car isnt moving otherwise cheers wheel alignment. It might be possible that the rack i have in is a uno turbo rack as it does feel light.:worship:

The knocking sounds like a sign of a bottom balljoint loose - these are quite difficult to check without disassembly, but try putting a large crowbar between the suspension arm and the cast-iron hub carrier, try to pry the joint apart. There should be no movement. If there is, what might be happening is that the wheel is finding its own angle once you adjust it with the steering, making the steering seem really light and unstable.

I think it is worth fitting two new lower arms considering the amount of work you have already done. Those balljoints are definitely something of a weakest-link, since they seem to wear out before the rubber bushes. Once upon a time it was possible to buy the balljoint separately (it is held into the arm by a press fit and a snap ring) but it can be so difficult to change them (and ensure that the replacement won't come loose) that it's probably a better idea just to put two new arms on.

At least it won't be the CV joints at fault (they make a cracking noise only when you turn tightly and accelerate) so you can probably save some money there. If either CV joint has a split boot, now is the time to replace it while you have the suspension apart.

roger that ! took it to another specialist who said its definitely the balljoints that are the cause of the weird steering, before that i even counted the turns it should take to get full lock and that seems 100%. I inspected the CV joints this morning out of pure curiosity and they still look pretty decent, i have to do the cambelt this month and im running on a tight budget after this suspension replacement(n)

Thanks for the reply Alex, you really do know alot of stuff hey! ive been trolling around here for the past 7 months but decided to join since i own a little uno too !
