i have a 1.7 diesel uno, suddenly im having problems shifting the gears, i can only shift to the gears when the engine is off. i tightened the clutch cable, the clutch pedal went up, and theres only a very slight improvement, i can shift to gears but there is a cranking noise. i dont know much about cars but my dad says it be the clutch disc, pressure plate or release bearing. please help.

Strangely enough, jjhepburn and I just had this exact problem with his Punto. Like your Dad, and like Steve, I suggested removing the gearbox, being fairly certain something was wrong with the clutch. We found a broken diaphragm spring finger, jamming the clutch. We also found a release bearing about to fail (the metal backing broken up). The clutch was non-branded, for what it's worth, so I prefer to fit clutches with a known brand!

Removing the gearbox requires no special equipment as it is light enough for one person to lower/drop it on the ground, just unbolt and remove the left-front suspension, put a jack and a block of wood under the engine sump to just take the weight off the gearbox mountings, undo them and unbolt the gearbox from the engine (not forgetting the earth cable from the battery, the small tin plate underneath, and the starter motor). Might take 5 hours or so if not familiar with suspension and driveshaft removal... less than three hours if you're on-form ;)

I think my words on this were made into a guide by Louie Bee - so maybe have a look under 'Guides'...

Refitting the gearbox is a little less taxing with two people!
