Hi,
I have recently decided to resurrect an old Uno 45 (G reg) that has been stood outside for over a year .

I have got it running just fine but the gear change is very very stiff. Anybody got an ideas what i should be looking for.. ie, probably just a lack of lubrication .. but where?

Don't take this the wrong way; but have you checked the gearbox oil?

Otherwise, I'd crawl underneath the car and have a look at any gear linkage points...

Hello...
I saw an old post about stiff gear change.. got the same problem.. did U find out what it was??

Assuming that there is oil in the gearbox (and it hasn't turned to treacle; try engine flush in the gearbox first), let's think about the shift linkage.

There are two rods; one that twists in a rubber bracket near the gearlever, and one that pushes and pulls. At the gearbox end, the two rods are mounted with nylon bushes that are a snap fit over ball-fittings - it is very unlikely that these would seize. But there are several small links with mainly unprotected (and some un-bushed) ends. There is also a vertical shaft that twists in a tube when you move the lever for-and-aft. The steel shaft itself tends to wear, so perhaps this has corroded and siezed.

At the gear lever end, the lever has a pivot point clamped in a U-shaped bracket. This is a common cause of side-to-side slackness, so people (including me) tend to overtighten the through-bolt.

But first you need to work out whether the lever is stiff in side-to-side movement, or stiff in fore-and-aft movement. Then you can narrow it down to a part of the linkage that could cause the symptom.

Thanks,
-Alex

HellO!
Thanks for the reply.. just lifted the car up and used approx ½ a bottle of lubricants all over the lincage.. What I can see is that the plastig or rubber cap that supposed to protect the lincage arms where gear lever goes down is broke and a big hole...

After the lubricants it feels slightly better så I guess that its in desperate need of going through and oiling in.. Its the forward backward movements thats the worst part.. side to side no much of a probl. I'v got a cluthc cable and gage that one a pice of oil too but no differance...

Since my area of expertise is computers I'll have to turn it in to a shop to get it looked at asap... unless anyone of you would like to come to Sweden for a visit :D

lancelot,
The plastic/rubber cap under the gear lever with the large hole is very common and unlikely to be much of a problem.

Check (within the engine bay) the crank attached to the vertical steel shaft at the back of the gearbox. All Unos that I have seen have the nut welded on, but if yours is not welded it could be about to fall off!

Within the steel tube, the shaft has two bushes. Wear/corrosion in these will cause problems. Should be possible to unbolt from the gearbox (but easier on a hoist).

Be certain to check or flush/replace the garbox oil!

Thanks,
-Alex

Hello!
After putting ½ a bottle of wd40 lubricants all over the gearleavers at engine it's coming around.. Works 200 times better than before.. allthoough since the swedish winter is coming.. it's booked for a workshop next thursday for an over haul just in cas.. ha was quite familiar with the problem one might say *lol*
