So I had me 56reg 1.9jtd MOTed today. 56K miles, new tires, new brakes within 7K miles. Was feeling good about passing...show up to fetch the car and get the news. I have not one, not two....but three count them .THREE broken coil springs. The shop still had the car on the lift and showed me. Each spring was basically the same thing. About 3-4 inches back from the bottom of the spring was broken off. I had no idea, the car drives fine and doesnt make any noise. And to think, I was complaining about 50 quid for just the MOT. Now im looking at 50quid a spring and 150+ quid to install them. GREAT!

I have had exactly the same, it seems to be a weakness with Cromas. I replaced mine with aftermarket ones from my local motor factor, cost me 42 quid each, did the job myself so no labour :D . best of luck.

its a weakness with all modern standard springs its very common on all makes of cars these days

From what I have heard around here I would agree it is pretty common. Just don't understand why? Being from the States, I have to say i've never heard of it there? I would have to assume its the material or type of steel being used. There are plenty of bumpy roads, cold weather, low profile tires or whatever other reason I have heard thats causing it to happen in the States, yet it doesn't happen there.

316 quid later + 50 for MOT and its all fixed...it does ride better! Of note my dipped headlights always seemed....well crappy. The shop adjusted them during the original MOT last week. Well after installing the springs...they had to readjust them today. So the front of the car was sitting lower because of the broken springs. It just was not really noticeable because both springs were broken...and not only that, they broke in almost identical locations and shapes. Amazing.
