I have a 20VT but am relativly new to it. I'd been noticing a little less kick from my turbo the last couple of days but hadn't really been pushing it. While on a bit of a mission last night, had noticed that whenever I pass ~3000 revs where the turbo kicks in it now vents to the wheel arch without having much effect. Any ideas on the problem mechanical or electronic??? The car drives fine except for the lack of the turbo and the large amount of venting noise now present whenever the turbo comes to life. In the absense of a quick fix am I likely to damage the engine driving it ~1hr to my nearest specailist? Any help much appreciated.

Appologies for the double posting here. Didn't quite understand the setup and the actions of 'Preview Post' and now seem unable to delete the first one.

I'd guess you have a split or loose pipe somewhere, must of the piping for the turbo runs vaugely 'behind' the passenger wheel area. You're going to need to get under there with a torch and do some looking I'm afraid, access is pretty tight though :( good luck.

It does sound to me like a boost leak too.

If it's coming from the wheel arch area I would suspect a pipe going to/from the intercooler (if you have a standard wing mounted intercooler) or possibly a damaged intercooler.

Does your car run completely as standard?

The Fiat intercooler has plastic end tanks that a thermo-moulded to the aluminium tubes and fins. The intercooler is not rated for sustained high boost pressure (great than 1.2bar) else the end tanks can start parting from the tubes and fins causing leakage. More likely to be a split pipe or loose jubilee clip

You will not damage your car by driving it to a specialist, you just won't be getting any boosty fun (n) . However I would be inclined to take is easy on the way there ;)
