I made some progress yesterday, popped the rebuilt head back on the block.
Then worked on fitting the inlet & exhaust manifolds. A few niggles getting various brackets lose so i could attach turbo & exhaust, but i am happy with progress.

But..

I am now unsure about the "plate" ( 1307682080) i fitted. I was thinking there ought to be a gasket between the turbo and the top of the exhaust, then i found the plate i had removed from the vehicle originally. I have put that between the turbo and the exhaust, but now i am unsure if that is right.

The parts diagram seems to imply the plate (part number 6) does go where i put it, but now i am thinking that is a silly place to put it as
a) it doesn't really look like gasket materials, it just being a flat metal plate
b) it isn't a ring, so there will be part of the mating surfaces where there is no plate.

It does look like the kind of locking plate, where you bend the tabs around the head of the bolt to stop it getting lose - but it doesn't have the tell-tale marks it has been used that way before and (as usual at my age..) i can't remember if i did straighten out the tabs when i took it off.

So I could
a) leave it where it is
b) remove it, and use it as bolt-head-locker
c) put nothing between turbo and exhaust, or hand make a gasket from exhaust gasket materials (which i might have somewhere in garage), or use a bit of exhaust cement.

any advice?

Looking at the photo I agree with you , it serves no useful purpose as a gasket.
If it doesn't look like you can use/reuse it's tabs as locking for the bolts, then I would be tempted to use good bolts and locking washers instead and if the mating surfaces are in good condition a small amount of exhaust sealing cement and bolt it together.:)
