Hi
I have a 52-plate Multipla 1.9JTD 115BHP 77kw bug. I knew that the previous owner (1 owner from new) had a turbo fitted.
I have just been told by a turbo supplier that the turbo fitted is the wrong one and is not interchangeable with what should have been used. It is the 736168-3 now called the 777251-5001S 55205177 which is for a post 2005 M737AT.19Z 120BHP 88kw engine not the 712766-5002S 55191596 M724.19.Z.X 8valve 115BHP 77KW fitted to the car.
Please advise.

Dont know what you want advice on really...

Hi Ffoxy
Well I'm hoping someone knowledgeable about these 2 turbos will contradict the supplier as it is an expensive error to correct. It has been on for just under a year, but that proves nothing!

Hi Billy, so your turbo has failed again in just over a year? And you have been advised the turbo fitters fitted the wrong turbo?

I'd go back to them with your evidence & insist they correct their error by supplying & fitting an incorrect part which has now broken again... the repair was not fit for purpose even if it was fitted more than 12 months ago... Try a Press threat if they wont entertain your query... in the local papers....

Hi Ffoxy
It isn't quite so simple!
The turbo hasn't failed though it might if it is definitely different from what should be on the engine! It was done by the previous owner and I don't have a receipt.....
That's why I am hoping for reassurance that these turbos are interchangeable. One is for an 52-plate 115BHP Multipla and the other is for a >05 120BHP Multipla. That's why I am hoping that there is someone knowledgeable about these specific turbos who might know there is no difference

Aah OK... Try ePER up there at the top of the page in the blue bar above the red bar... :)

Based on what's been posted, you have a non-standard turbo which is working but you are concerned that it might fail as it's not the right part?

Turbo's normally fail due to lack of oil and seals going. You've got a turbo designed for 120bhp engine which is running in a 115bhp engine, 120bhp engine might run a little cleaner but nothing to get concerned about. Oil supply is obviously ok else it would have died long ago.

What if it is definitely the wrong turbo? Is it worth taking it off and putting another on when this one is doing it's job?

Incidentally, there appears to be something wrong with the BHP/KW figures, 77kw is 105ps, i.e. Earliest Multipla turbo-diesel, 88kw is 120ps. Is it possible that they are saying that the 105ps turbo can't be interchanged with the 120ps?

Hi Momoe
Thanks for a reassuring post. My fear is that it might fail. Also if its output profile is different it might overboost my engine - the injection system is different as is the ecu.
I could replace the turbo but that is extra expence I could do without!
The 77BHP was as quoted but the BHP of the 1.9JTD went from 105 to 110 to 115 before changing to 120 when they revised the injection and ecu and fitted the turbo I have on my 115 BHP

I can't see any reason to be concerned. As long as the fittings actually fit, which they must do since the turbo is working, this is no problem. The only difference you might notice is if the turbo is bigger or smaller than original. Then the spool-up time could be different than original. Overboosting is no problem, the electronics make sure your Multi get's what it needs.

Just enjoy your Multi. :)

Sound advice from Unclechuchu, the maximum boost is primarily governed by the MAP sensor (located on the back of the inlet manifold), the turbo supplies what the ECU decides is optimum.
JTD115's are chipped to 155bhp without reliability issues (although clutch is at the limit).

Even if it did overboost, it's not doing it continually - anyway, your right foot is the ultimate override in any case. I guess your concern is about reliability, however, I can't see any reason to be unduly concerned.
