i have just go hold of a j reg 1.1 fiat uno with 45k miles on the clock. i was just wondering if anyone has droped a turbo lump in a non turbo uno and wat kind of a job is it. and is the 1.3 uno turbo carb or injection? cheers

1.3 and 1.4 are multipoint injection.

The conversion has been done many times, recently by Biz who will no doubt see this post and give you a few pointers.

You'll need the following plus parts i expect i'll overlook..

complete engine
exhaust system
gear box inc drive shafts and cv joints
brakes, i'd advise swapping both front and back
electronics and wiring loom
header tank
rad
IC
all pipes
suspension

Your engine bay needs to look like that of one from a turbo, so you'll need, well pretty much everything!

I haven't done it but I've seen it done several times, it's just a matter of changing over LOTS of stuff... the bodyshell is the same so everything fits - I've noticed that where the intercooler and oil cooler bolt on to the front crossmember, you may have to add some threaded inserts (or nuts and bolts) since there are a few more fittings pressed in for the Turbo model, but all the holes will be there.

Bear in mind that the Uno Turbo has all sorts of other differences, like the rear brakes (discs instead of drums), steering rack (higher gearing), and for that matter gearchange linkages etc. etc. You basically have to strip the car...

All Uno Turbos are fuel-injected.

It was!

I missed 'oil cooler'..

And intercooler, and turbo windscreen washer reservoir (the ECU wants to sit where the normal reservoir normally goes) ;)

Also depends on how far you want to go with the conversion. Mechanically you can do it and leave the rest of the car as standard, but it is nice to have the turbo interior, electric windows, factory tinted glass, turbo dashboard ect.

It is basic nuts and bolts stuff. You'd be best off finding a rusted turbo with good mechanicals and swapping the whole lot over. The whole job can theoretically be done in a long weekend, but you WILL encounter broken parts and awkward nuts and bolts so it would be wiser to put aside at least a week.

To see what's involved, take a look at DunUnoTurbo's UT Restoration thread. That's as comprehensive as it can get and took about 9 months, so expect to spend a good proportion of that time on yours if you want to do it properly.

Good luck!

i have ever read that smokeme drop a turbo to a fiat fire engine, and it can be done (altough it wasnot that simple, but compare to converting all uno turbo engine parts? hmm...)
since insurance here is not a big issue and had finish rebuild the shell, i am going to the same path matey :)
cheers

For a start you need virtually a complete Uno turbo for parts. You can't just fit the engine, thats only the tip of the iceberg.
