hi all,

i have a 1.2 8v FIRE MPI engine in my punto mk2...got 4-2-1 manifold, decat, straight through pipes, custom backbox, bored throttle, bored inlet, custom induction kit...has made a bit of difference and now im seriously wanting to turbo it

iv never turbo converted an engine before but know how to work and how to set it up i think lol

i just want to know please what turbo will be best suited? is there any manifolds that will bolt straight to my head and hold a turbo flanged onto it or do i have to get it all custom made?

iv been reasearching and found out everything else and i am going to give it a go just want to know which turbo to use and if there is a bolt on manifold to hold that turbo or not please:)

cheers

a few people have used the GT15 turbo from the 1.7 astra diesel in there conversions. i dont think youll find a bolt on manifold. youll have to cut the flange of the turbo manifold and weld it on the one youve got iirc

cheers guys,

i think i found that thread mate

couldnt find a list of suitable turbo's in it though but i hear a lot about these astra 1.7 diesal turbo's so will prbly go for that

does it matter what year the turbo is off?

and any ideas what turbo this is and manifold?

thanks again lads

that will be the money sack of ****e i bought for parts.

just an astra turbo as mentioned.
the manifold is a cinq/punto55/60 manifold with a flange welded on.

there are hundreds of turbos that will work well on our engines and most of them will be much better then the astra turbo which is to small.

also the turbo is the cheapest bit. hope you looked into engine management and compression level

right then i just done an engine job tday and a corsa van 1.3 diesel i inspected the turbo as the engine was out...found the wastegate goes back into the turbo intake straight on the tubro

anyway...

i was thinking what will be better a corsa 1.3 turbo or a astra 1.7 turbo?

will a 1.3 turbo run off a standard ecu that will be remaped? and will it give some boost or be too small?

sorry about the amateur questions just wondering...i wont be using a megasquirt ecu straight away will be runnign car on standard ecu for couple of days

cheers

Think you might want to do abit more reading up on this, if you didnt go for a engine swap as it would be too hard, then why go for a turbo conversion?

as far as im aware you cant run a turbo on the standard ecu as it cant tell any pressure above atmospheric and will not fuel it etc

nah i dont think engvine conversion is hard at all just too time costly...its not a straight swap...straight swap i can do in like 1-2 hours id say on a punto 1.2 8v simple....but its a bit of trial and error obvs some things will run idfferently and the 1.2 8v didnt come with some features as traction control. plus personally i hate wiring ecu and looms, not keen on wires mate lol

plus id much rather have a turbo love to have some booooost(y)

and yeh i dont have a clue about turbo conversions mate i havee been heavily researchin over the last week but still some things im unsire about :)

Mate, trust us, turbo conversion is going to be more work than an engine swap, even a "difficult" one. In PL we have literally truck loads of 1.2 16V, 1.4 16V swaps, which are not that straightforward, yet not so many turbos (but still some). Craig would probably tell you that he can swap engines during a coffee break, still his turbo projects take considerable time (and he is quick with these things from what I can tell ). For me, swapping the engine was the easiest part of my turbo conversion.

Of course, you can do it quick and dirty, but this will not last more than a week.

Running a stock ECU is also not a good idea, browse a couple of pages back for a thread on this subject (y)

Having said all this, making a working turbo conversion is really rewarding and great fun to drive :D

if your running a turbo then you will need a new ecu for sure, with wiring ect ect. and if your doing that then you might aswell use a different engine as the wiring has to be swapped anyways... could go the route of munkul but with a 1368 engine.... or a hgt block..

a average 11242 8v will only put out similar power to a stock hgt block anyways just more torque.

Everything built in the last 20 years has some form of electronic control fitted so even fitting the worst type of 'turbo grenade' is going to need some wiring alteration so if you are scared of wiring, buy a bigger engined Punto and be done with it.

Cheers
