Hi,

I'm trying to repair a few faults on my 1991 Tempra SW 1.6, carb model.
Main problems are :
-idle woes : idle rpm gets up and down, engine will sometimes idle, sometimes not, sometimes idle is at 1300rpm and sometimes the engine simply stalls when below 1500rpm ; i'm currently rebuilding the carb using lots of cleaner fluid (the p/o didn't use the car for about 1yr and lots of deposits have always been removed but i fear some crud can be blocking holes in the carb.
-front wipers : they don't work. they just move a little up and down (1cm). p/o told me he replaced the motor from a scrapyard but didn't get the right model. i suspect linkage badly out of sync but can't be sure until i dismantled everything.
-i have electronic dashboard (SX model) and the warning light for 'open tailgate' remains on whatever i do. i checked for ajar sensor but only one i found is in the tailgate, behind the trim (sort of level sensor with a ball inside) ; this works well and interior light goes off when i close the hatch. Is there another sensor for the warning light? does anybody have an electrical schematics for tempra check control? i have several schematics from haynes and porter manuals, a few other ones from a local tech book, but nothing related to this feature.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards,

Hi!
Check the parts which connect the wipers to the motor: some times ago we had to change them because, if I correctly remember, there was some plastic gear which got broken and so the wipers moved badly or not at all.

Probably the linkage or gearbox, much easier to replace the whole thing from a scrapped car.

That's the rear interior light.

There is but where ?, for the doors it's inside the actual lock mechanisim.
I have the diagrams for the Tempra check circuit, I'll scan them and post pdf's over the weekend.

Took a little longer than expected as my scanner went up in smoke - literally !.
Circuits, location drawings and diagnosis for the "Check" circuits posted on line at www.brickfieldspark.org/temp/fiatmanuals/temprainfo.htm

Hi,

many thanks for the information!
i suppose this applies as well to the station wagon.

well i dismantled everything (had to replace the tailgate lock mechanism above the license plate anyway) and it looks to me like dead contacts in the central locking actuator...will try to find another at the scrapyard since oem unit is 50€ at fiat dealer.
have dismantled carb and cleaned it, was completely blocked with crud. had to drill through the plug at the bottom of the float chamber to clean passage for idle fuel!!! wil reassemble the carb on the car saturday.

besides, i got brand new timing belt and tensioner, front rotors and pads...looks like it's gonna run soon!
concerning the wipers, i haven't had time to have a look at the problem but on the parts catalog i don't see any plastic cups? but there is a pinion available for replacement, cheap...i hope to find broken teeth!!!

regards,

Hi,

been spending a few hours on the tempra last saturday...
now wipers work (the guy who had replaced the motor probably didn't know how to adjust linkage...i wonder if he knew some adjustment was required at all!!!)
carb has been reinstalled, and seems to work ok! idle is smooth now and i was able do adjust idle mixture.
ALL TEMPRA OWNERS BEWARE : if you have too much play in the float axle, the float will get stuck! if stuck in the lower position, needle valve will stay open, excess fuel will flow above carb, and fall on red-hot exhaust manifold!!! i had to adjust tightess of the float on its axle then adjust float level before the car would run correctly.

all the best,
zp*

from memory, there are switches in the actual catches on the side of the tail gate [lift up one]which need to be fully closed to turn the warning lamp off.............
