Technical Transmission Noise

Hi All - old faithful (Uno Diesel 1993 132,000 miles) has started making a clonking noise (hope that's not too technical) when the car is reversed.

Doesn't make an difference whether the front wheels are turned or not.

All the five forward gears are fine.

Any ideas?

CV joints maybe?

Does it only happen when the engine is on?



Shouldnt be the CV joints if it doesn't happen when going forwards (in my opinion).

Could be a worn gear problem. I would also check the linkages to make sure they are not touching anything when reverse is selected.

Check the exhaust and rubber mountings. The engine tries to twist in the opposite direction in reverse so it could be the exhaust banging/ clonking. That could explain why it only happens in reverse and not the five forward gears?

I`d check the fluid level, the linkages & I`d bleed the clutch slave as well.

It's definitely a transmission noise - not exhaust or anything like that.

Only happens when the car is driven in reverse, and turnng the steering wheel from lock to lock doesn't make any difference.

Very odd, and may have to revert to our friendly local garage I guess...
