My Tom Tom One first edition (I know, it's old) has just decided to only charge when you pull on the cable whilst it's connected. That's a bit tricky to do and drive at the same time so I decided I would try to open it up as it's old anyway, to see if there's a loose connection, or something obvious.
The thing is, I can't get into it. The screws are like 2mm or 2.5mm allen screws, but they have a pin in the middle which stops a normal allen driver from working. Does anybody recognise this type of fixing, and can you buy a driver for them? I am sure Tom Tom would charge more than is economical to fix it.Any ideas? It's got camera locations and traffic update and everything so I don't want to lose it if I can help it.

It's a common type screw head. Any decent DIY store should have the appropriate set of allen keys for the job. I have a set myself. If I remember correctly they set me back about £10

I've got a set of Allen drivers from 0.5 to 3.5mm, but the the screw has a centre pin (I didn't notice it at first glance) which stops the driver from getting a proper hold.
Have you managed to open yours with normal allen keys?

I wasn't talking about the standard allen keys. You can buy allen keys that have a small hole in the centre of each key for the small pin to sit in. They were originally used on things that people didn't want Joe Bloggs to get in to as security screws. The most common was on Inspection Covers in the road to the underground services so that members of the public couldn't get a set of normal Allen Keys and unscrew and lift service covers or access to junction boxes etc. But now that most company's have moved on to more secure lock type methods to keep people out the screws have become more of a general thing to use just like standard Allen bolts.

It's a common type head that is used on a lot of things now and as I said any decent DIY store with have the appropriate Allen Key set. Go into a decent DIY Warehouse/Superstore and go to where the normal standard Allen Keys set's are. You'll find the Allen Keys with small recess's/holes in the centre of them in the same area. My new set (30 piece set) set me back about £20 if I remember correctly. I had a cheap set too (10 piece) that cost me about £10.

If you want I can order you a full set of titanium tipped with moulded handles that covers every size that I use at work. Designed to be used on manholes etc It'll set you back £185 lol

Cheaper to buy a new Tom Tom lol !!
Thanks for that. I had no idea there was a different version. I will have a good look in the diy sections.
Cheers(y)

bet you will pick up one on ebay for a couple of quid. prob sold by people who sell replacement screens and such.

BUT i can tell you that the female connector in your tom tom will have come away from the PCB. this usually pulls the tracks up with it.

My uncle dropped hes tomtom one xl (think its called that) with the charger plugged in (mini usb connector) and hes was just like what you describe.

In the end i cut the connector from the cable and hard wired it into the tom tom.

as most people said look on e-bay as you get ones with a 4 weeks of use for around £60
