Hello

I test drove a ducato camper today, which I consider buying at a reasonible price, but during the testdrive I noticed a ticking sound, which follovs the revs...

I suspect a valve with too much clearance.

So my question is, is the valve tappet clearace possible to adjust, or is it self adjusting?

the car in question is a 2002(facelift) witn 2.8JTD engine

Hi.
What sort of mileage has it done?
The front crank pulley can make a ticking noise, they have the rubber centre which perishes and cracks.
It maybe as simple as a new auxiliary belt or a small exhaust blow.

it has done 120 000 km from new... all serviced held...

I think it got better the next day I drove it, but the noise was still there...

It could be the pulley they seem to be louder when the engine is cold and can disappear once warmed up but will gradually get worse over time and tick all the time.
They seem to go at around 80-100,000 miles; it is a similar sound to a slight manifold blow on the exhaust which will also quieten as the engine warms up.
If you can get a look at the crank pulley from the front you will see the rubber centre, if it’s cracked it could well be your problem.
Not sure but I think the tappets are shimmed and rarely cause problems.
