Hi

Some advice please.

The story goes... I used to take my Fiat to Garage A (and they were pretty impressive in resolving problems other garages couldn't) but then they moved away so I started using Garage B as they were nearer and also specialised in Fiat (but not strictly the model I own).

Been pretty contented with Garage B until recently that is...

About six months back I had to get my cambelt replaced (due the bearing having cracked - ouch!!)... and a month or so ago I had replace the engine sump (again ouch!!). I then noticed my car lacked power at low revs (it was a nightmare driving over speedbumps and pulling from traffic... and engine even cutting out) and trouble starting from cold. Took my car to Garage B... left car with them for a few days but they could not find out what is the cause of the troubles.

A friend of mine who used to be a mechanic had a look and noticed that the heat-shield was missing and

Decided to take my car all the way out of town to Garage A and this is what they found out:
- cambelt incorrectly fitted (three teeth out)
- dipstick fitted incorrectly (bent to wrong side of manifold)
- inner drive shaft gator missing (this should have been discovered when new sump fitted)

So I wrote to Garage B informing them of my displeasure of their poor quality of repairs and asking for a refund for the cost of re-fitting the cambelt and dipstick. Also asking how come they didn't notice the missing heat-shield and inner drive shaft gator. Garage A offered to discuss this matter with Garage B.

Of course Garage B weren't happy to get my letter and questioned why I took my car to another repairer. Well... you guys could fix my car! Also how could you not noticed the missing parts? They mentioned warranty but this was not mentioned before now. However they did say they are willing to discuss this further.

So before I take this matter any further... what are my rights as a consumer in this matter? Also is it possible for the teeth on a cambelt to be displaced by itself?

Your advice welcomed.

You can name the garages you know - someone else might have had a similar experience with them!

The good garage Garage A is DTR in Surrey... I'll hold off naming and shaming Garage B until I see what they be willing to do to rectify this situation.

I think all the garages are bad. Maybe you can lodge a complaint to the government.Good luck.
