Toyota has rejected claims that faulty electronics are behind its worldwide recall of more than eight million cars.

The company said mechanical faults with accelerator pedals and floor mats were the cause of the problems, rather than the car's electronics.

Outside studies have recently criticised Toyota's electronic safety systems.

But at a press conference on Monday, Toyota rejected those findings as not credible.

There are rumours that this is caused by the phenomenon "Tin whiskers". Which I come across in my line of work periodically. It's when a beard of matter grows across electrical contacts and make a circuit, although this contact would not allow a high current to flow, it can be enough to drive a L.E.D. Problem comes when this lit L.E.D. is a permissive for an upstream logic system, and the logic starts to make decisions on this spuriuos condition.

Problem first came to light by NASA, a few incidents were put down to this being the cause. Incidently this phenomenon only started to come to light when they taken the lead content out of solder.
