Hello,

I have a 1.6 injection 1995 Tempra. The alternator light has been intermitantly coming on and tends to be at varying brightnesses which would indicate to me either a faulty warning light, or that the alternator is on the blink but not quite completely shot. On inspection there seems to be some sort of air intake at the top of the alternator, and after a bit of rummaging around found that it had perished quite badly. Could this cause the alternator not to charge at full capacity or am I likely to need a new one.

Thanks for any help.

Ben.

I know that this is a quite old thread but as i had similar problems loooong time ago, i will add my point here.
My alternator was a magneti marelli 65Amps and from time to time at least one out of the three diodes (used by the regulator to supply the rotor? of the alternator) failed. As a result, with on one diode off the battery lamp starts to lit low and the power of the alternator is reduced (mabe by 33%).ith 2 diodes off the lamp lits brighter and the output current and probably voltage is not sufficient to cover the loads and so it discharges the battery if the lights are on.
I had to change that component with the three diodes (black plastic like the letter E with 3 pins at one side an a cable at the other that goes outside of the alternator) but the problem appeared again after a few months.
The solution came when i bought a used 65A Bosch alternator form a Uno Turbo. It has better regulation at idle and i have not problem since 1995? if i remember well. The car is a 1992 model with 142000klm most of them during the first 5 years.
