tempeture gauge

hi my tempeture gauge drops down to 0 then up to hot then drops down again water ok and no boil up have unclip cluster at back

any ideas please

like a faulty stat in open position,when standing car heat up and take it for a drive it drops down nearly to cold as water is rushing around cooling system with no obstacle like a stat to hold until temp is reached.
new stat and hose clip needed and coolant.

i had a lazy/weak thermo stat

I could easily see changes from Hot (1/2 way) to warm 1/4 when driving around
