Well, we`re off to France in a couple of weeks and I`m finding it impossible to get any breakdown cover that includes recovery to the UK in the almost unheard of event of anything going wrong !!.

The problem is that all the insurers say that if the cost of recovery exceeds the market value they wo`nt do it ( recover the car ). It`s a 1988 70SX, not listed in Glass` nor considered to be a classic so as far as the insurer is concerned it`s really only worth it`s scrap price - not to me it is`nt. :bang:

Can you suggest anything ? Do`nt really want to do a longish trip with no cover but....

thanks and stay cool,
Richard

You can't really blame the insurers, the cars probably only got a market value of £300 and a recovery from France to the Uk would probably exceed that. The car is also old and therefore probably deemed high risk. One option might be to hire a modern car. Alternatively just go and if you breakdown find a local garage to get you on the move again.

Exactly. Renting an almost-brand-new car costs a trivial amount anyway when you look at it rationally. Say, 30 pounds a day at the most. 1car1 (LCH Local Contract Hire and Leasing) had the best deal for me - I think it was 18 quid a day for a week.

If you do want to take the Uno, just make sure everything is sorted out - all those little 'warning signs' taken heed of, e.g. any small coolant leaks or any slight ignition misfire, any slightly-sickly battery, etc. Then there's no reason why it would break down in France any more than it would break down at home.

I don't remember ever being stranded by an Uno, but I think it's fair to say that car-stopping breakdowns usually have plenty of warning signs. A possible exception might be the finned module on the side of the distributor, or if the ignition key jams (something silly like that) - take a spare module and some tools just in case.

And if there isn't time to get the Uno thoroughly vetted... then take a rental car :) Do you have other cars lying around? I have five others at the moment
