i have a 1997 model mark II fiat uno 45. ive been using shell helix which is a mineral oil for the last 10 years. i need to know whether i can use a good synthetic oil for this engine, will there be any improvement in fuel figures or performance or maintenance?

also which synthetic oil and what grade?

In theory yes. However after 10 years of use, probably not.

I used fully synthetic oil in my Uno. I think it was Millers 10W/ 40. Worked fine and I even went for two years without changing the oil! Can't say I noticed any improvement in economy but it seemed marginally smoother. Maybe that was just an illusion.

Don't go any lighter than 10W/ 40 though as it will be too thin for the FIRE engine.

i'd stick to what youv'e been using for the last ten years!! seems to have gone well and still is, fully synthetic oils are made for newer cars, i put mobil 1 in my old peugeot gti and it didnt like it (sounded like a sewing machine) i use a semi synth all the time, 10/50 good alrounder, and top up with an additive inbetween oil changes, Ant!
