Hello,

Just purchased a fiat 500 lounge and the dealer offered me a deal for Supaguard, it is supposed to keep your car in showroom condition.

Has anybody had this ? and is it worth it?

Thanks

You're better off finding a man who valets cars for a living and paying him to detail and wax your car for you than paying the dealer a nice comission for what equates to someone spraying a can of something you can buy for £30 off ebay. If you search on this forum for supaguard and also look in the valeting section, you can find loads of info about the process and make your own mind up :) I think it's very subjective.

I absolutely hate the part where the sales person tries to flog you an 'extra'. I know they have to do what they can to make a commission and I know it's up to the individual to say yes or no, but it gets on my wick tbh.

Glad I bought our own 500 from an independent. He didn't try to flog me anything other than GAP, but as previously posted, he got ultra short shrift from me and that conversation lasted less than 20 seconds. Nope, we walked away with an almost brand new car for a fantastic price (without Supaguard by the way!), deal done in an hour.

With our MX5 when we bought that new, they tried to flog us Supaguard. "Don't push your luck" I believe was my reply. Personally, as already posted, I'd save your money and spend it on something else, but it is your choice at the end of the day.

I got it for free from the dealer, but I appreciate that it is a con :p I mean, it's nice and everything: paintwork is nice and shiny, the dash does seem to be more wipe-clean than I would expect (spilled some coffee on it the other day), etc. But yeah -- probably save your money!

Bottle of Autoglym High Gloss Sealant for the paint and wheels, tin of Scotchguard for the seats, an hour's enjoyable work on you new pride and joy - job done for less than £15!

Nothing on paintwork will offer more than a few month's protection.

I got it for the checkered cloth seats - supposedly dirt wipes off. It doesn't. It is WORTHLESS SNAKE OIL!!!!!!!!

(Those who know me will tell you that I never use exclamation marks - but this stuff is such a con that I have to.)

Yes.

No.

It is a complete con. Do not buy. Even if offered it free, ask for something else instead. Anything would be better.

Robin, that is the voice of reason. There are better products available at a fraction of the cost to apply yourself.

What irked me beyond belief is when our local Fiat dealer tried to sell me an ex-demonstrator 500 and wanted to pass on the entire cost of Supaguarding as an extra. That was the point when I walked away and bought my 500 elsewhere.

I've had a few mishaps on the chequered seats (in case anyone is wondering it was with a cup of tea :p) but the only person that I've seen say anything good about the Supaguard was Chrislida (I think) but I still wouldn't pay the asking price that was being quoted.

Here's an example of a thread that might be of some use...

Sales allways try this on when you buy a car ...

Fiat did it to me when I ordered my TA . In the past BMW tried , Landorver tried and luckly my Porsche was 2nd hand so they couldn't try !

Waste of money you might as well give the sales guy £300 in his pocket . You still have to the wash and polish the car even with Supaguard.

See my car in the members area....its 2 days old , paint work is full flatterned and detailed ...all without Supaguard . Hard work and several hrs of it ....you can see you face in it !!!.

Is this Supaguard for the whole car or is it just for the seats ?

and how much are they asking for it ? if its about £50 covering outside and inside then get it. Or you can do the "detailing process" but it may seem anal if you are not into washing and polishing cars that much.

If price is about £100 then just get some cans of scotchguard type stuff for seats and get the recommended face mask or better still pay someone to do it. with the bodywork its worth doing a good (resin) polish when you get it. Just take care of the back of the car it gets very mucky in the wet.

for glass I use Halfords silicone stuff - over 30mph in heavy rain you don't need to use wipers, make sure it does not go onto the black rubber, after polishing that off I use autoglym vinyl coat to ensure black rubber / wiper head etc are in good condition.

btw: use the above products with caution, get a face mask... as you could damage your respiratory organs and the silicone stuff will def damage the black rubber...

Problem is half the time its not applied correctly

the car paintwork should be polished then Virgin cleaned using a pure alcohol (otherwise the polishing oils prevent the sealent from bonding with the paint work along with the fact it will seal in containments if they are not fully removed)

then left for x amount of time to cure before buffing then left some more time without getting wet....

According to some horror stories i have read in the past its often not applied correctly or in some cases only put on the roof and bonnet where you can see the water beading....

To be fair to my dealer, the salesman didn't try to push Supaguard on me, despite packs of the stuff lying around the showroom. I admit I am a bit anal about keeping my car clean, and enjoyed the process of applying the products. But hey, I've paid 12 grand for something that I've chosen partly because of the way it looks, so why not keep it looking as new?

That's not the issue Trev £300 or so could buy you a big box of cleaning stuff from one of the on line detailing suppliers

One of the biggest factors in keeping a car in good condition is the care taken when washing it even superguard wont protect it from the dreaded swirlomattic car wash or the rough and ready hand car wash places with the dirty sponge. last time i looked into this these products don't warranty any damage done by bird droppings either ...

Another thread on here...
https://www.fiatforum.com/500/271118-supagard.html?p=2770303
where a contributor paid £200 for the treatment and the interior was the main reason for getting it done.
If someone was looking to do the interior 'on the cheap' and didn't use the proper mask it could have other consequences. Since I've gone back to a 'standard' dark interior it is much easier to keep clean than the chequered cloth of the Lounge (although it is nice and bright).
