Going through right-hand bends my van suddenly pulls sharply right, disconcerting. So, the steering is OK until a point, then a sudden oversteer/swerve into the corner. Why?

Rear axle bushes are shot perhaps?

Nightmare of a job.

Check the front suspension first, it's easier to fix, but oversteer makes me think rear bushes.

It's just been through an MOT (last Friday) when this problem was evident! There is also a "clonk" from the front end somewhere (LHS I think) e.g. when doing a three-point turn. MOT only one advisory "slight wear on track rod end ball joint".

The symptoms are as if, when going around a sweeping right-hander, the steering wheel has been suddenly twitched clockwise ( it isn't being, but that's the effect on the cornering).

Do you have the "City" option to make power steering much easier...

My old 1.2 stilo had it and it was a very light car on the front end... never needed to use it unless in the shopping car park for ease...

I used it a few times whilst on the road and it was terrible, it assisted too much at times when you least expected it... same in my friends punto... it also felt like you was on super greasy road... not good.

Now i have a different stilo, much heavier on the front end than 1.2. Its a 1.9 16v multijet 150 running around 200bhp... fresh suspension up front and 17s with 215/45 tyres almost new.

Its heavy and I constantly use city mode... now it feels like my old stilo without the city mode enabled... i guess if you have that feature and you have no damaged bushes or shocks / snapped springs... give it a try and turn it off if its on...

Have you also checked tyre pressures and tread?

It's a 2004 2.0 JTD window van. Should have said. Apologies.

I've had a look and can't see anything wrong. The effect is certainly there, though. There's sometimes a clonk when turning at slow speeds, and at moderate speeds cornering right it's as if someone suddenly turns the NSF wheel sharply into the bend, not sure if "oversteer" is the right description, it certainly seems to turn more sharply into the corner (or even roundabout), worrying sensation. No uneven tyre wear. Right-handers only.

That sounds more like the front suspension, worn wishbone bushes, though I'd hope a garage would have spotted that.

Fronts you can pry around with a crowbar, any movement and they need replacing.

Rears you really need it on a lift to see.

Beware, there are some really crap wishbones for sale for the Eurovans, I'd get TRW to be on the safe side.

It has been disgusting weather here. The clunk I could live with for a while, even the lurch, till a nice day, but a horrible grinding graunching scraping noise developed, when right or left lock on, and any small amount of power.... you know....

So.

Wishbone assy.: £63.
CV joint: £36.
Track rod end: £16.

Total including labour: £227.

(Argh!)
