Has anyone seen that ridiculous ad for the Audrey TT, that claims Jimi Hendrix is the design influence? What the hell is that all about?

I don't know why they don't name it the IT and be done with it. Can anyone picture the frizzy-haired, tie-dyed guitar hero driving around in such a clinical, soul-less lump? Somehow an 80-foot long pink Cadillac with massive fins seems to suit his style a little better. Who do they think they're fooling?

Driving past a typical VAG (snigger) dealership makes me think I'm seeing in black and white: it's all black and chrome, there's not an ounce of colour or design flair in any of their range.

And while your on, the latest ads for the Vectra suggest it's unique in that it has an 'interactive driver system'. I've got one of those too: it consists of a steering wheel, gearstick and three pedals. Dolts.

Ads

I quite like to TT ad myself, better than the usual pap. Although I also fail to see the connection between Mr Hendrix and the design. The guy was ****ed up on drugs most of the time. If he was going to design a car it would look more like the one Homer Simpson designed for his brother. I agree on the souless forecourts, there are far too many silver cars around. I blame it on the fact that most of the ads feature silver cars. Baaaaa!

its really a skoda

Its ok I suppose, considering its the same floorpan as a skoda.
I'd rather buy a skoda and keep the change.

Engine

Am I right in thinking it uses an engine from a Golf?

Re: Re: Engine

The Audi TT ouses style, yeh maybe that advert is a bit budget and I know what you mean about teh forecourts but audi took a big risk releasing the TT (it was originally a concept car). I loved the TT since I first saw it as the concept car and think that when it was released it was very original, since then vauxhall have jumped on the bandwagon with the VX220, and come lets face it, its CRAP! IMO Audi make some really nice cars, the A3 and old A4 are good looking cars, reliable, well built, only thing with audi's is there rediculous price tags.

VX220 versus TT?

Oh come on! These are totally different cars. I personally wouldn't buy either, but at least the VX220 is a real sports car! The Audi TT (like much of the VAG range) is a Golf with a hat on.

There's not even any styling similarities between the two: the VX220 is all angular, and the TT is one big curve. These aren't competitors in any form!

As for taking risks: the TT is a very functional, conventional shape. All the styling lies in twiddly bits and stuck-on ally parts. There was virtually no risk in launching it, especially after the Beetle, and particularly as it's not very quick and is front wheel drive!

As for the A3 and A4: the A3 is just a Golf with less toys for more money, and the A4 is Audi's equivalent of a Passat, but without any rear legroom. Have you actually driven these cars? They're more like kitchen appliances than cars: they do exactly what you'd expect; no more, no less. Even Fords are more fun to drive, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Zee Germans!

That will be the german influence then. At least with Fiat you get a bit of Italian flair and unpredictability!

Re: Zee Germans!

We women always did like a bit of Italian stallion :) Audi, dont they cost an arm and a leg to fix when something goes wrong, and when one thing goes wrong it seems to be the whole car falls apart (previous experience although might have something to do with female driving)

Audi TT, VX220, etc

I had a half day test in a VX220 last summer and I must say it is a faboulous car, I enjoyed it much more than the Elise, it is a car designed for driving alone so you cant compare it with the TT. The TT was designed to give enough comfort and every day use ability with a bit of flair and I think it has done exactly what they set out to do. I dont think you can call them slow (especially against a Bravo for christ sake!) although I think they are more of a ladies car...mind you I wouldn't mind a convertible 225 version for the summer!

As for the adverts, well what do you expect when you give a marketing design company millions of pounds! The only thing I have ever bought because of an advert was a steam cleaner...and then I bought a different make to the one advertised!
