Hi everyone, hope you can help.

I have a strange clattering, maching gun-like sound from the engine when I, or the cruise control, fully depresses the throttle. The enging runs fine, goes through the revs without a problem and the sound is independent of gear selection or revs.

It's like something metal touching the teeth of a spinning gear but only happening the rare times you suddenly wack on the juice.

The engine is otherwise faultless having been rebuilt after a timing chain failure at 31000 miles.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am tempted to wonder if it is "diesel knock". This can sound somtimes sound mechanical.

For more information may I suggest that you google the term. Causes seem to be in the over fuelling area. Possibilities include injector problems and leaking turbo oil seal.

You don't say how many miles it has now or it you have the issue since rebuild.

If it is diesel knock and its on all cylibders. First thought would be timing e.g. out a tooth, worn timing tensioner or stretched timing chain.

Though if it's since rebuild and head was skimmed as part of rebuild they might have used the wrong thickness head gasket. That reduces the volume of combustion chamber so you can get knocking. But it could be lots of things as mentioned.
