Hi All,

My '98 1.4 12v has had rather poor braking performance for a while. The brakes work, but not well. The ABS only kicks in when there is snow on the ground. Wet road isn't enough. When the brakes are cold, it sometimes feels like rear brakes are the only ones working. The tail sort of drags down when braking the first few times in the morning. Once the brakes have been used a few times, they are even but not strong. I have a 2000 Multipla and that probably can stop in half the distance. Recently the handbrake hasn't worked well either, with the lever being able to be pulled all the way up before having any effect. I figured the rear shoes were gone, so I pulled the drums, but no there is at least 3-4mm of liner on the shoes. And the pads in front look practically new, at least 10mm left. I have bled the system which has not had any noticable effect. What should I do? I need to be able to stop. I almost hit a deer yesterday because my brakes suck!

I thought maybe the rear shoes were worn out or needed to be adjusted and this was causing lots of pedal travel to engage the rear brakes, and thus the fronts weren't getting enough pressure as all the available pressure was being wasted on the back.

Help!

The handbrake is easy to adjust from under the lever itself. The rear shoes are self-adjusting, (assuming the mechanism is still working) I would check if there is any meat left on the linings. Your main proplem could also be a slightly jammed caliper or some substance contaminating the discs/pads or drums/shoes. Was there any mention of a prob. at the last M.o.T.?

It turns out it is the auto-adjusting thingees which have seized. I took them out and got them unstuck, but they still don't work right. I'll have to replace them, but I was able to manually take up some of the slack and that made a huge difference. The overall braking is much better. I suppose there was excessive travel in the rear cylinders and this meant the front never got full braking either due to the lack of sufficient pressure. Some new adjusters and I'll be doing fine, as all the pads and shoes have plenty of liner. Thanks for the reply!

Well i had new brake pads and discs on my baby for my MOT at the beginning of may and i was told that the brake lines r abit corroded so my brakes might not be as responsive as they mite be. so maybe check ya brake lines??
