Hey folks....

Just got round to getting some alloys for the motor (Stilo 1.6), and looking to lower it by 30 or 40 mm in the next month...looking for some general tips....was thinking about just getting springs and keeping the original shoxs....would this be advisable....any thoughts?....not really in a finacial position to buy new shox and springs together............or has anyone got some lying around looking for a new home?...lol

Any feedback appriciated......

springs should be fine m8, as long as they are NOT loose whenthe car is jacked up, what size of alloys have you got?

From what I've heard, ideally it's best to do the springs and shocks at the same time. A small drop like up to 30mm should be okay on standard shocks, but anything lower really needs uprated one's. As far as I know, it could well be fine for a while, but you could end up wearing out the one's you have quicker.

Saying that, Coyle (who has the smoothed 1.4 Stilo on FF) had 50mm Eibach Sportlines on his standard shocks for over a year and didn't have any problems. Personally though as my shocks were on the way out, I got Eibach Pro Dampers with the Sportlines and it feels brilliant. Kinda firm, but it really pays when you get on the twisty stuff :D

I paid something like £400 for the springs and dampers all in (£130 for the springs roughly and £270 for the dampers) and that was about the best price I could get. There's cheaper springs and dampers out there, but Eibach are one of the best and were recommended (y)

On my JTD I have the full Eibach pro-kit (-30mm, struts and springs) and after nearly 3 years and in excess of 20K miles they're still a revelation over the standard crap put in by Fiat - what were they thinking:nutter:

The standard struts will take a 30mm drop on all Stilos easily, beyond that the lighter engine models (so pretty much all the 4 cylinder petrol ones, except the 1.2) will take a drop to around 40mm - but to go lower (other than speed-bump hell) would be a bit much on unmodified struts.

Tips - Most Stilo owners will agree with this - buy Eibach, the Koni springs aren't in the same class.
Avoid the cheaper stuff as they don't last. Look at Sportiva Fiat in Germany (where my stuff came from, albeit before the Euro got as strong against the Pound) as a possible source for Eibachs.

There's always eBay..... but will keep my ear to the ground and see what turns up (y)

Thanks for the info folks.....will lower on standard struts for the moment and save some pennies to get some new ones at a later date......

Stuarty, currently on 16" rims

Sportiva Fiat is a good site, especially for Novitech stuff. Have been tempted to give them a try on a few bits and bobs in the future.

I got my springs and dampers off Motorsport World, which is actually based in Scotland. Gave me a call shortly after I placed my order to confirm delivery times and everything. As far as I've seen, they're cheapest for most things I've looked up (y)
