Technical stiff gearbox on a 1.7D uno

hi has enyone had this problem ov stiff gear changes on 1.7D befor iv checked the oil in the box that was ok checked gear links there abit worn but seem ok wot cud it be ??????? :bang:

I'm not sure exactly what box the 1.7D Uno has, but some later Uno gearboxes (the ones with 'top linkage' - gearchange linkage to the top of the gearbox only, the arm on the top of the gearbox has a round rubber concertina boot) have an EP gear oil specified - about two litres.

The trouble with EP gear oil is that over time it tends to form a black sludgy residue that gums up the synchros.

I find it helps to add an engine oil flush (one can of the STP flush works well) to the gearbox. Leave it in there for a few days, then drain when hot, and replace with new 75W80 gear oil.

It has to be worth a try to save taking the gearbox apart :) How many miles/km has it done?

The other type of Uno gearbox has a plated pressed-steel cover on the top linkage for the gearbox, and a vertical shaft at the back of the box with a press-on ball socket joining it to the gear linkage rods under the car. If this sounds like yours, note two things: the vertical shaft can seize (check it twists freely, if not, remove and un-seize) and the gear oil should be non-EP, about three litres of FIAT ZC90 or equivalent such as Castrol VMX.

Had same problem on my 45s 999 Fire Mk1 and changed gearbox oil and re-greased linkage ends to no avail. It turned out to be the vertical linkage rod outside the back of the gearbox. Removal was easy from under the car and you put WD40 down the tube and work the lever free then re-assemble. Just done mine again after 5 years and gears fine again. Hate to think how many boxes have been scrapped with only this!
