my gears have become quite stiff while driving, only really when putting them in 1st and 2nd,sometimes there fine and other days hard as hell to get in gear, any advice??

start with new gearbox oil. Castrol Syntrax (I think).

Does it change with engine temp or outside temp? (ie is it stiff on a cold morning)

well thought it may have been affected by the cold, but some days its cold as hell and its fine then others its stiff as hell, sometimes nearly ram the thing in,ill change gearbox oil, where does oil for gearbox live and how do i go about flushing old stuff out??ill look in haynes manual also

also car still rattles / makes an annoying noise when car engine is cold, started doing it when weather turned cold, sounds to me like a belt, gets louder as i rev engine but goes away after bout 1 minute, both belts are less than a year old,cam/aux belts, started to think it may be a pulley etc that belts run on,either on ca belt or aux belt, what u think??

The haynes manual will show the drain and fill plugs.

The engine noise is most likely the tappets coming up to pressure.

Whats the engine and how many miles and how old?

Ahhh.. I thought you had a 1.4 :)

When was the engine oil last changed?

just been looking on web and afew people have trouble with stiff gears, especially in winter and alot went for oil change and it helped so maybe thats the answer for stiff gears, would i need to car lifted to do it??

tom, whats best way to get rid of tappets then??engine flush and new oil???

p.s.not sure if u remember but was having trouble with car running rough and sort of misfiring now and again,i used forte gas treament and it works a treat, that stuffs great,u can only buy it at garages etc as they dont really sell to public like at halfords etc, alot of main dealers use it,bought some on ebay for bout 7 quid

If it's gearbox oil and it smells like
gas then it's burnt and needs replaceing

well alex you will have to nick some forte stuff and sell me some cheap

we buy it from forte at about £6 a bottle, thats for the gas treatment

thats good, they sell it for about 11-15 pound round near me in leeds, was gunna maybe try injector cleaner, and when i change oil the motor flush, maybe it will stop these noisy tappets if thats what making them noises on my car

How does gearbox oil get burnt? ;)

Worn gearbox oil smells HORRIBLE, its hard to describe the smell but it makes you feel ill.

Hobbo, you've got an old engine that has never been renowned for its reliability, short of stripping it down and cleaning/replacing most of the internals there is notalot you can do really. Use good quality oil (selenia 20k ideally) and change it frequently if you are only doing short trips.

I've never liked the idea of engine flushes as in order to remove the grot from the oilways the grot has to pass through lots of engine bits that could get royally ****ed up by it.

yes im gunna put the selenia 20 k in,shop4 parts sell it for 32 including delivery, would it be cheaper at fiat???
i read afew forums saying forte motor flush helped with noisy tappets, may try it

just when warming up,quite noisy then after bout 30 seconds-minute there gone, sometimes when engine is ticking over though i can here a ticking noise but that may not nothing
