Technical Steering wheel Play Help needed

hi all

just wondering if theres a solution to up and down and side to side play at the steering wheel on a 98 sei with 58 k manual steering

had an advisory on it at an mot 2 years ago last years mot didnt pick up on it however in the past few months there noticeable play at the wheel



ive checked and tightened the steering wheel at its big nut but still play which i guess are the non replaceable bushes/bearing where the steering wheel mounts to the column i enquired with the chap at ricambo fiat and he said there was no fix for this and ive googled it to death trying to find an solution other than replacing the steering column in its entirety which aint exactly a cheap part new and not easily available either and second hand the risk is the 2nd hand is as bad as the one you take off.

Side to side play is sometimes nothing more than the strange nuts which hold the column on needing attention or replacement.

I think they're the strange form they are in order to provide some collapse in the steering column, but if they're abused at all they sort of slacken off.
