I wanted to know what the largest size of steel wheel i can put on a mk1 punto 5 door, its a 90 elx 1.6, dont want the hike in insurance so was going to paint a set of steelies, i know they are 98 and dont want to go over 6j in depth, and i know there must be 15 or 16 inch or even maybe 17 inch steel wheels out there that match the origionals, any ideas of what i could get them off and the max size, thanks.

Thanks, just wanted it too look like ive stuck alloys on but doing them gloss both sides but no extra on insurance, ill have a look, how about some 16s with a spacer? Just a thought, trying to give it a grand makeover on a very tight budget, just started painting the dash and plastics inside and got vinyls ready, ill see how much ebay have some for, thanks.

16s will fit, however it will in effect lengthen out the gears and make it feel alot slower - hence my suggestion of 15s.

You should be telling insurance as well even if it is steelies. If thats your only reason i'd just stick some alloys on, it makes little to no difference in price of insurance in my experience. And guess what, they will clutch at anything to getting out of paying out on a claim, changing wheel size comes firmly under changing something on the car that they should know about.

Fiat coupe 20vt wheels look epic on a mk1, they are 16".

Try phoning your insurance and and say you are thinking about putting a set of standard fiat alloys on your car, normally as they are standard wheels they wont increase youre premium by that much, you can then look at mk1 & mk2 punto, bravo ect. I have 15" bravo alloys on mine and they said as they are fiat alloys there is no charge.

didnt knew that larger tires increase your insurance cost

here u can have any size u want and insurance costs wont change, if u dont have tire size approved and checked by some firm one time fee of like 50 eur (basically its a piece of paper that has your tire size written in it), if cops find out u have wrong tires on and no paper that approves them boom 400 eur fine and they take your license plates

You should notify the insurance company of any changes. Tell them the wheel size, type of wheel and tyre fitted. A few of the tyre manufacturers (Bridgestone, for example) publish recommended tyre sizes for wheel profiles. As long as you stick to those, you'll be fine with VOSA, etc. Some insurance companies will increase the premium )only a little in most cases) others will not. They could argue, for example, that an expensive set of alloys will increase the value of the car, for example.

No idea where here is -- you're showing a Union Jack (UK flag). If in the UK, you should stop smoking that stuff, it's making you paranoid!

is that croatia?

sounds very strict,

I thought the early 90 ELX came with alloys as standard, same as on the GT and Cabrio (Cabrio was also a 90 ELX). Does your insurance company know that it has steel wheels on it?

Here in Malta you can change tyre size every week and no one gives a rat's backside.. You might fail Mot if they're stupidly mismatched or oversize but nothing else. Even mods like induction kits, lowering, cat-backs, tints etc are never declared.

On the other hand we pay stupidly high importation tax but insurance premiums are not expensive then.
