Hi Chris,

bit more info would be handy, is it turning over quickly, does it just not fire? or is it not turning over. Earth strap might look healthy but be corroded inside hence its worth getting a jump lead between battery earth and block.

hi ,

when it does start ,i turn the key as normal it starts straight away ,but the majority of the time, i turn the key and i just get a click sound

thanks chris

The solenoid sits on top of the starter motor, its another smaller cylinder, its job (1) is to pull the starter motor pinion into mesh with the teeth around the edge of the flywheel, it will make a click sound when doing this, and then its supposed to (2) turn on power to the starter motor. Sounds like its only doing (1) which is a sign of lack of power (battery or cable), faulty solenoid, pinion meshing problems. Had this on a mirafiori 131 what a pain it was.

hi there,I had the same problem on a 53 plate jtd,the earth strap under the engine was the problem they sometimes look ok but like the other member said they rot inside the crimp.if you have a jump lead connect it at start of lead and other end where it fastens to body see if any difference.good luck.
