General Starter motor wires - what goes where?

Hi..

I'm trying to sort out a starter motor prob following a botched job by a back street mechanic. Unfortunately, I didn't see the original starter motor connections, only how he'd wired it up.

It was wired by him as follows: thick wire coming from battery, terminating in metal plate, to point B on the starter motor motor.

Thick red wire connecting to alternator to point M on starter motor.

(Plus ignition spade connector to "spade" on S.M.)

I assumed this was right, but from looking at the Haynes I suspect not. Can anyone confirm the actual wiring please? Many thanks in advance.

Nah.not with wiring like this,
once wires fuse together (fizzle) its too late,
