Got an earlyish 2006 x244 Ducato with a 2.8JTD. I need to change the starter motor but it's dark in there and can't see it. Do I need to take off grill/bumper, jack up etc? Where am I looking exactly?

Part of the problem is it's VERY oily in there. There's obviously an oil leak somewhere which I'll need to get to but it's too dirty to see anything. Short of a pressure wash which I don't like the idea of, what's the best way to get my injun nice and clean, or at least de-oiled so I can see what I'm doing?

TIA.

Starter is super easy in these its front and center near the bottom, the oil stops your sump and crossmember rusting so I wouldn't bother cleaning it off unless you're planning on dealing with the leak. Engine cleaner spray is enough to dissolve the deposits be sure to put a tarp or something under it first. Spray the whole lot and let it sit for 20 minutes, then give it another spray wait a couple of minutes and attack with an old dish brush. Use the scraper part of the dish brush first then the brush side to get into the nooks and crannies. Once you've removed the first layer you may find a dry layer of gunk underneath and need to reapply the cleaner spray. A weed sprayer full of water and detergent is a handy way to wash it off without soaking yourself and everything in the viscinity.

Thanks for that. Took just under an hour including getting a replacement socket wrench. I hit something with the old one and the mechanism went ping!

I got the serial 1 005 831 448 off it but the guy I'm buying a new one off of said " part number will be on the large part of the barrel and it will start 0001 with 6 more digits." so I guess I have to go scrubbing that first!

You could try putting your reg number into eurocarparts.com This should give you a few starter motor options and prices.
