Hi
What is the easiest way to empty out stale petrol. Any help appreciated.

Would NOT recommend pumping the tank dry by this method. Guestimate the amount of fuel left in the tank. Pump down to a level where if you fill the tank back up you have a 80% new to 20% old mixed. This will get you going easily. After that normal usage will quickly bring you back to 100% good fuel.

Reason for not pumping to low is three fold, (although 3 point is not 100% valid these days)

1) Pumping to much poor fuel though will potentailly lead to tar/gum/emulsion levels increasing in the fuel system. In normal driving there is general agitation to keep things evenly disttibuted and diluted.
2) Risk of air locks and more importantly running the fuel pump dry which can lead to overheating and/or wear.
3) In the old days debri at the bottom of the tank would tend to accumalate together, stick together and cuase in-line blockages. Most modern cars car some form of filter (ofter a coars mesh filter) to stop these larger deposits getting sucked up into the system.

mmm... i partially agree, a build up of crap in the lines will not happen, the pump have multiple meshes before it and an inline filter after.

the only valid point is that you 'could' run the pump to dry and damage it, however as long as you are sensible there is no reason for this to happen.
