Hi all, i have a problem with my 155hgt, in the mornings when the car has been sitting there all night i start in and for a second or two there is a squeal/screech. it sounds like a belt slipping, but the RAC man this morning(left interior light on all night), heard it and said it could be the starter motor??? anyone else had this prob?

(cambelt was done 9months ago)

cheers

I have 155hgt, mine does the same. Start it up squeek for 2 seconds and never does it again while engine is running. Fan Belt

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It will be due to the weather changes.

If it does start to get worse then get it checked out.

it could be the starter motor, mine used to screech when cold. i think you have the same motor as mine too.

If you still own a punto HGT then 2 different engines.

Punto - 1.8 16v
Bravo - 2.0 20v

i cant understand why the starter motor would screech, surely it would clunk. if you get what i mean.

i have a mk1 hgt, it also makes this screech in the mornings when it is cold,i think it is just the fan belt shrinking in the cold. it did it january wen i bought it, stopped in the summer then started again recently - i wouldnt worry cos i have done 20k since it first started screeching without problems!

as soon as the engine has started.not when its turning over.

about 9 months ago by powerfiat. is it a major problem? whats the worse that could happen?
should i go and get it looked at?

cheers

the tensioner could malfunction and you would loose the aux belt - so no power to the batt.
If it gets louder or gets constant get it checked, if not, all is OK.

It's the starter motor - my HGT (Both of them, actually) used to do it - even worse when it was cold and or wet; it's the centre shaft of teh starter motor, becoming dry.

Dont worry about it.
