Ok i was driving back from somewhere this morning and doing about 60mph and my speed-o-meter just dropped and started bouncing around the 20mph region unill finally it came to a rest at 0mph all the way home. My milage wasnt clicking over so apparently i drove 0.5 miles this morning when i actually drove about 60. I just got back in the car and it seemed to start ok but it finally gave up trying and started bouncing again and finnaly dropping to 0mph again. Its not affecting the driving or anything but i dont know whats wrong... Any suggestions or has it happened to anyone else???

Most likely the speed sensor, it can be found on the back of the gearbox. Could just be a dirty connection so take the connector off and give it a wiggle.

ok this may sound really dum but can you give me a detailed description of how to do that? (ie: how to find it and take it out etc...) Im a bit thick when it comes to cars.

Be warned that the speedo sender unit in the gearbox, when it has come loose has shattered a number of gearbox cases. It was one of the biggest early faults on the cars. Get it fixed ASAP in other words and like Tom says, £14.99 at Hellfarts for a Haynes is worth two in the bush... or was that something else?

****!!! I bloody hope it hasnt done that. Is that expensive to fix then? How hard is it to fix my little problem? Is it just a case of opening up the gear box and taking the sensor out and cleaning it and putting it back in?
