Hi folks

just thinking about placement of some 4" speakers.

I know they can go in the parcel shelf, but I have 2 issues here.

Since this is a monocoque body, surely drilling two large holes will compromise the structure. Maybe not a problem in the UK, but could be in New Zealand. And local guys have any thoughts (Roger?).

Secondly, that area under the parcel shelf links to the rear air vents so in theory is open to water getting in. Not good for wiring, although I've not seen any rust in there so it may not be common.

Thoughts anyone?

Tim

The rear quarters have plenty of room. The panels themselves are too flimsy to mount to, but you could easily permanently mount a stronger panel behind them on which to screw the speaker. Then fix existing quarter panel over it, as normal, and finally speaker on top.

cheers, Steve

Tim, I doubt that 2x100mm holes there will actually cause structural problems but your transportation guys might need calculations or other evidence for that. But I wouldn't do that anyway because there will be a slight negative air pressure in that compartment which, along with the unwelcome noise that will be transferred through there, will affect the quality of the sound from the speakers. I used to have a pair of full sized hi-fi speakers on the back seats. Not practical and not safe!
Could you fit some speakers perched on the inner wheel arches or set into the sloping bulkhead that the fuel tank sits on?

The period radio setup had a bracket under the dash with the speaker mounted in it behind a cover - mono only

lovely....

Hi Tim

Get one of these, they are pre cut to fit 4 inch speakers and they make a nice finish to the parcel shelf. They are fitted with stands which provides a space for the speakers, mine fitted are Kenwoods with a shallow base to fit in the area beneath without fouling anywhere. Run the wires behind the seat and under the carpets or floor mats along the tunnel to the stereo, which I have installed into the centre console as shown. The rear shelf came from Van Der Laan and the console from Ricambio. They are available now from most suppliers.

Hope that helps(y)

Hi Hugh

Yes, I noted your set up previously, which I liked. I will certainly get the console for the stereo. The parcel shelf you show also fits my interior colour scheme.

You say the parcel shelf is fitted with stands? Is that from Ricambio or Van der Laan? And do you need to cut into the car shelf structure?

Also, do you have a model number for those Kenwoods?

I'm in the UK from April 18 to May 6th so may try to make a trip to Ricambio.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim

I have attached some details on the shelf, I have it fitted on the rear metal shelf with nothing more than velcro on the stands which are part of the shelf. There is no cutting or drilling required as the shelf unit is quite snug. The shelf also has the speaker hoes cut, you just trim out the vinyl surface and slot the speakers in. These are secured to the board with four screws. The shelf is made of wood. Hope my drawing helps?

I'll have to get the speaker model later as the only document I have in the file is the warranty which doesn't give the model details, (generic form). The shelf came from Van der laan and it is shown under the Abarth section 'Tuning' interior. I am not sure the speakers are still available but the model number will give me a spec sheet which you can use to find similar dimension items, I'll send that when I get the details.

Cheers

Hi Tim

The strap is still in situ and connects up fine, there's plenty of space between the shelf and the strap mount. The shelf does not sit on the seat back and it will pull down with no problem.

Hi Tim

Here's a a drawing of the speakers, this is representative of the shallow depth of them. I am not sure this model is still available but the depth dimension is the main factor. Once you get the speaker shelf you can get the overall diameter of the cut out for the speaker dimensions ok?

Cheers
