There ain't much cheap on a 4x4 of any sort, except possibly a light bulb.

Try your local motorfactors they may well surprise you.

Good luck Pandamaniac

Hello Jon.
Would recommend that you get the current Fiat price and use this as a guide when you ( as mentioned above ) play the motor factors off against each other.

Do not take any bovine manure from the factors ( or Fiat for that matter ) about parts being more expensive for the 4x4. A quick check on the Fiat Eper will confirm that the part number for the C/V joint is the same for 4x2 and 4x4. Use Fiat part number 5998706 as a guide, though this may have been superceded by a new number within the last couple of years.

It is a reasonably straightforward job to do yourself if you have another vehicle available, as it is time consuming and messy. You may wish however ( as mentioned above ) to let a garage do the work for you.

Please let us know how you get on.
Regards Petel

Jon, when I did mine It was cheaper to change the whole driveshaft [less than £20 new from Autoparts surplus]. They had more a few months ago, but I've just had a quick look and their site seems to be empty which is odd because they're a big outfit. Might be worth checking out later though.

Thanks for the replys guys.

So when you say the driveshaft I assume you mean the pole things that get the drive from gearbox to wheels? Is that £20 each then?

Thanks for recomending a garage to do it. What sort of time should they take at doing it? Is it a time consuming job? Was going to do it at college with some other students and a LandRover enthusiast of a lecture who has done absoloutly everything on different car's over the years, just to save labour costs.

Jon.

Yes it was something like £38 for the two , one side was a bit cheaper than the other, and it comes with the boots already fitted so its just a matter of dismantling the suspension, slotting the complete driveshaft in and bolting it all up again. At the time one cv joint on its own was about £20. They might be out of stock now, or not trading, but it might be worth checking out the cost of replacement driveshafts elsewhere - sometimes complete units work out cheaper than the component parts.

It might pay to get the bolts [16242321] that go through the strut and the swinging arm in advance as well. They have a habit of seizing solid, and if you shear them off without a replacement you're bu**ered ! I had to use my 3/4 drive normally reserved for the Landy to shift them, and they must have been very close to shearing.
