Hi All,

I have decided to take the plunge and try to change the timing and aux belts on my 05 1.9JTD 'nosejob'.

I have just taken the aux. belt off and there does not appear to be any movement in either the tensioner or idle pulleys but there is distinct movement in both the alternator and water pump. Is this normal? There has been a definite 'squeaking' for a couple of months from that area that has become progressively worse.

Cheers
Mark

Hi,

If you are changing the cambelt, do the waterpump. I didn't change it on my 1.9 JTD Multi, shortly after had some squeeling which I took to be the aux belt, but it wasn't... it was the cambelt !

Turned out that the waterpump (which was ok upon belt change) had started dragging and acting as a brake on the smooth back of the cambelt (making the squeel)... as I was driving around northern Italy all summer.

After 20 000 km I had to do the job again and got off lightly I reckon because the cambelt had stretched and had gone slack, flopping around... (Wince wince). A little bit longer and it could have jumped a tooth putting out the timing or worse snapped and stuffed the engine...

Won't be doing that again... I change all the cheap and nasty pulleys too

Sounds like your "endfloat" is pointing to a fatigued pump ? New ones are pretty tight. Any weaping of cooling fluid.

Just change it...

What is the voltige comming off the alternator ? I hear they are a horror story to replace.

OOops just saw that you posted some time ago. If you have not done the pump keep an eye on cambelt tension (pop the covers off for a feel) especially if it continues squeeling...

While I was down there I also changed the aux belt pulley tensioner, sandwhich crank pulley for the aux belt. They were all gone too...

Good luck.
