I already have a Stilo JTD but my gran (who lives next door) is getting a new garage door and she said I can use it as a workshop.

Now I've been looking at getting an old car to build up my mechanical skills, would an uno be the best bet? and which one should I get?

bearing in mind that after I have built my knowledge up after a couple of years I would look at doing an engine swap and building it into a track car

Well from my POV a uno is ideal to start on as a "learning" car

So simple but so effective

I for one since owning my 1st MK2 UT have learnt so much about cars in general

Ive had 1 turbo engine out and put it and all the ancillaires in a new shell (all on my own mind)

Did a 1.1-to-turbo pretty much by myself (did get help from a good friend of mine)

And if you was to choose an uno you know you have a great knowledge of information and experiance on here, aswell as Turbo Collective

But 130 TC's are getting race now too so if consider one of them if you can find one

mk1 70sx i think is ideal, very easy to work on, the little comforts you'd like, sunroof, electric windows, and lots of space to carry bits and people, and its not a bad drive either, can be pushed on quite enthuisastically, what ever you choose, check the lower control arms, esp the ball joints:eek:

what years did the mk1 run from and to?

Well from a D- reg to a G- reg, some early B's and C's where around but i must admit they are drying up fast so i doubt you will ever find one
But the later F plates etc are aroung in small number's but again drying up.. :worship:

I'll start hunting round some scrappy's and see if they have any half decent ones (y)

I doubt you will find a uno turbo in a scrap yard but might be worth a look, theres one near me rotten out but has good engine and box, read my thread on RUSTY I'D BLOODY SAY it's all in there.. :)

Or buy a 45S with factory fitted sunroof, fit SX dashboard and electric windows, fit SX front bumper with fogs, fit Uno turbo interior and consider fitting a 1242cc Punto engine. Hey that sounds like what I'm doing to my Uno :D

1983 to 1989, or 'A' reg to 'G' reg. I think there might even have been some press cars on a 'Y' plate. However, I have only seen ONE 'A' reg Uno on the road in the past few years (see my gallery). I also have only seen one 'B' reg car, and that was a turbo reshell at the ACE Cafe last year. 'C' and 'D' reg Unos are now very thin on the ground, and most seem to be around 'F' and 'G' nowadays.

Every now and then an immaculate base model turns up. Last year I saw an almost perfect 45 with something like 40K on the clock.

There was also a thread in 'Let's Talk Fiat' where it appears that there is only something like 5000 mk1 Unos left, and very few turbos too. They are a dying breed, so if you find a good one grab it while you can. (y)

Oh, and they're simple to work on and if you get a good one they'll last for years :)
