My uncles had smokey for the past three months. Got her back at the weekend to find this under the bonnet

No idea when or how it happened, id already cleaned the jets and the carb before I noticed it, and cars running fine. (i think) Im certianly no mechanic.

Also found a small crack in the manifold, dont htink it too bad though.

Water has come out of the radiator somehow, duno if he over-filled her with water or opened expasion tank and she pished everywhere. Or the pressure built up an made its own way out.

Defo looks like there was no coolant. Need to remember that the tank cap has an incorperated pressure release valve built in. I think whats probably happened is the fan has failed to kick in in traffic. This has lead to overheating, and as water has a lower boiling temp than the average coolant mix, the pressure has built up, big bada boom had happened on a small scale and has caused that mess.

I'd recomend flushing the coolant system a few times with a hose, and then refill it with coolant at a correct concentration level.

Then run upto temp and check fan kicks in. Might be worth checking condition of contacts on cooling fan and the thermostatic switch that controls it on the header tank (y)

Just a thought..(y)
Might be a good idea to get some of that radflush (or whatever it's called!) in there aswell, just to help clear the radiator thoroughly.
before i become interested in panda engines mine used to go to a mechanic that always made me pay for coolant, until one day i opened the radiator cap and to my surprise there was ionly tab water in it.
Now i m using a radiator cleaning chemical (COLLEX - detartrant radiateur).
This chemical stays inside the cooling system for about 100 kms, after its only necessary to flush it out and puting in some good coolant (green paraflu 11) mixed with water (but not tab water) 50%/50%.This prevents corrosion of metal, gaskets and the all system. The coolant, cause is pressurized, also tends to rise the boiling point of coolant, right?
Cooling system is a fundamental one, and its not always care for.
Damn my english...so much to tell, and not sure how to do it... LOL

Thanks for all your suggestions and tips people. Il have to get it done by the weekend, need in the garage to service the other car. (one job I can just about manage)

Was considering flushing it out, must look for some system flush too. The fan is definately working, I heard it come on as I was adjusting the idle-jet in the carb.
