I've had a Selecta at the workshop with a dead gearbox for over a year now. The plan was to convert it to manual but due to a new arrival I may have a solution that will keep it as an auto. :D

This is the Selecta in question...........

And this is the solution............

The advantage of using a Lexus LS400 gearbox is that this comes with it .......

Ok, not exactly a straight swap, but worth the extra effort I'd say. :D

Flawless plan!
The only thing wrong with the Toyota was bland looks. You've solved that at a stroke.
Rear axle from a 4x4 or chop up the Lexus one?

Exactly! We're on the same wavelength Andy. (y)

Back axle is yet to be decided. Mazda MX5 and Capri 3.0L have been mentioned, but whatever is chosen will need to be low geared and easily coupled up to a straightforward suspension design.

If that lump will fit, how about a Coupe 2.0 20v unit? I'd really fancy one of those in a Panda!

Once you've recovered from Panto & my bank balance recovers maybe......? So it's a 2.0 20v, climate control, Recaro Coupe leather seats - well you get the idea, all of the Coupe in a Panda shell. :worship:

If you kind of squint and turn round they look pretty much the same anyway

Looking forward to this project Vern!

Should have gone to specsavers. :p

This, if it ever gets off the ground, will be a project that I will dip in to now and again as the serious work allows. There are so many challenging areas that could shelve it for good that the chances are it will never turn a wheel in anger.

I have been out with the tape measure though and the gap in the engine bay of a Panda between the suspension turrets is 29", the width of the Lexus engine is 28" :). The length of the engine is more of an issue, 27". After allowing a little space for a radiator the engine protrudes about 4" beyond the bulkhead so this would have to be cut out and re-fabricated, which means that the steering rack has nowhere to go. Need to solve this one in my head before going any further.

The disadvantage over the Lexus conversion is that it's a transverse/front wheel drive set up so simply wouldn't fit :(.

I could do the seats though, if you don't need to use the handbrake. :p

What a shame! :(

Have you thought of branching into chop shop territory? I always fancied a Coupe with an Alfa sport wagon back grafted on - a bit like a much sleeker version of the XJS shooting brake. And I know you think I'm joking, but imagine the lines if it was done properly...... :nutter:

Back to the original auto idea (not like us to drift off topic)

Google 'Project Binky' and you will find a guy putting Toyota 4x4 Turbo engine and running gear into an original dimension classic Mini.

It's awesome. He is such a clever guy:worship:

Bug*er.... Should have mentioned it's a youtube thingamy
