General seat belt slow to reel in

hi all, seicento just failed mot on the belts slow to reel in. anyone else had this fault. it seems as if they are struggling to pass through the guide at the top. if you pull and release below the guide there is not an issue and they recoil fast and true? can the guides be opened up a bit safely?

There's some advice if you do a search. Most helpful for me was using a lighter to take the fluffy edges off the belt (done quickly of course!), then a spray of furniture polish to improve slippyness. Worked for me
