Hi Lads,

Driving along in my Scudo today, dropped it down into 2nd gear, felt a clunk on the gearstick and then the gearstick went loose. It moves up and down, into the postition of 1st & 2nd gear, but without actually changing gear. So I'm stuck in 2nd gear. Clutch feel fine. Could it be the cable that's snapped? if so is it an easy enough job to do myself?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Gary

Mine does this all the time (S reg 1.9Td EL combi) and it's the gear linkage ball joint popping off the gearbox mechanism. if you can see between the right hand side of the engine and the air box you can pop it back on - when mine first started to pop off I needed to use mole grips to push it back on. Now it's worn enough I can do it by hand :bang:

It sometimes helps to take the air box off - couple of clips and it all kinda pops apart and then you can lift it out of the way.

Might be the same thing for you.

Hi Jenks,

Well, took the airbox off and got access to the linkages. It appears the one on the left controls the right to left motion of the gear stick, and the one on the right controls the up and down motion of the gearstick. They both seem to be solidly connected to their ball joints and have spring loaded buttons on top to help with removal & application of joints. When I manually shift the large counterweight it seems to move the gear that the car is in. I can then feel the correct amount of resistance for one shift of the gearstick then slackness again! Am I missing something, do you have any idea what it may be.

Many thanks for your help
Gary

I have no idea what's causing your problem, in your pic it's the ball joint to the left that keeps popping off on mine.

I am wondering if its clutch related - when you press the clutch does it disengage the drive to the gearbox completely?

Hi mate,

Yes, when I press the clutch it fully disengages the drive. The gears are stuck in second though. Thank goodness it wasn't any other gear or I doubt I'd have got it back to the house.

So at a bit of a loss as to what it can be really. Any techs out there fancy a stab at it? Thanks again,
Gary:confused:

Hi thought I'd post an update.

Turned out to be a snapped gear linkage cable. Bit steep as they only come as a pair. £99 + vat!!!

Think I'll shop around.....

Thanks for your help.

Hi guys, had a similar gear shift problem this week. Going up from 4th to 5th, the gearbox dropped into neutral and the gear stick went all loose and wobbly. Luckily i was able to pull over into a lay-by. Didn't have any tools with me but managed to manually select a gear to get me home.
When i looked into it the following day i discovered the short linkage between the "weighted" selector bracket mounted on the gearbox housing (see picture above in post #3) and the selector shaft (to the right of weighted bracket) had disconnected.
Each end of the linkage should have a "spring loaded button" mounted on top but the left hand side one was missing causing it to pop off.
I suppose what i'm saying here is that its not always terminal should you have a problem like this, and with a bit of fiddling (now you know where to look), it could be a simple re-connect to get you home untill it can be looked at properly. This could also potentially save an expensive "roadside recovery charge"
Hope this is of use to some of you !!!
