SCREACH!!!!!

Hi there, i bought the other day a 1998 fiat bravo 1.6 16v SX. But sometimes when i start it up, especially in the mornings (this morning for instance) there was a hell of a screach when i turned the key, it also juddered a bit and cut out. It started the second time but still with an atrotious scream. Any ideas what it is and can it be fixed? Thanks,

My HGT used to do this, especially when cold.
It did it for 2 years i just ignored it.

that just sounds like you need to tighten your fan belt.

so your saying it wont do any damage to the engine, cos thats just really my main concern. Im not too bothered as long as it starts without much hassle.

No it doesnt really sound like a fan belt scream. Picture having 2 live wires, one in each hand, then scratch the 2 together and you hear a kinda static screach. Thats the best way i can explain it.

could quite easily be a problem with your starter motor not disengaging after turning the engine over

yeah i was kinda thinking it could be the starter motor but i wasnt sure. Are they expensive to fix?

Expensive to replace, easy and cheaper to fix if you know what you are doing! Alternative may be a reconditioned unit exchange and no, I dont know anyone who does it on the Bravo/a

Try taking the starter out and cleaning it.
Then gease/oil the business end and to make sure change or check the bushes in the other end.
Should work ok then or at least rule it out as a fault.

Is that hard to do, take it out it mean. Im not a mechanic so dont know much about cars personnaly.

at least check the tension of your fan belt...symptoms are of an early morning screech and then it will let off. Watch out, coz your battery could go bust.

same problem when i bought my 1.6 it was the starter motor, i got a new one fitted for £85 from a local independant
