So I have a 98 non ECU van fitted with a mechanical pump. I take it that this could run directly on veg oil etc I'm aware of the limit of 2500ltrs of self made fuel by HMRC etc. However and purely for info as I have a spare engine with same pump and if I rigged this up to run as a diesel engine I would be able to run this on red diesel with no issues however would heating oil work just as well given that it's around 40p per liter and theres 2 types 28 sec and 35 sec which would be the better to use?

ECU or non-ECU doesn't matter, they all run on red diesel.
In fact when you have your heating tank filled, the liquid is colorless. The delivery guy adds some dye at the last moment, the amount depends on the amount of fuel he delivered. That way the truck has a clean tank and can immediately be used for other fuels.

Yep and i ran an old izuzu 1.7tdi engine on heating oil, free of charge from a friend...

I would not use biofuels though... dad did this with his lwb shogun and it wrecked the pump seals...

£500 labour to strip half the engine to get to the pump to replace the seals, fuel system had to be drained and flushed... he only used it over a two week period, pitty he didnt know that he had to have them seals uprated / changed to avoid them from being eaten by the biofuel.

It this for a stationary / off road application? Otherwise if your tank is dipped you're screwed we were dipped at the ferry port last summer. 28sec has aromatics, faster flame front, higher temperature combustion and lower lubricity in a high compression D.I. engine you could have burnt valves melted pistons worn pump etc unless you mix it.

As regards bio. Bosch moved to Viton rubber around 93/94 so bosch mechanical pumps after that should be OK before that you need a seal kit.

I was not aware of diesel fuels with different viscosity. Isn't 28sec better known as kerosine? That certainly isn't suitable for a diesel engine, but it can be used in gasoline engines in warm climates when mixed 50/50 with regular gasoline.

Where where you dipped, RoI or UK port?

It was a 94 mitsubishi shogun 2800 intercooler if i remember correctly.

Had a private reg M9LLR, now scrapped.

Top and front seals in those pumps went from 70k onwards even if you didn't use veg oil, they were made under licence by zexel so not sure if they switched to viton at the same time as bosch.
