cummon guys, surely some body out there can tell me whether they have experienced this.
car starts fine... then revs at 4000 rpm and no amount of pumping the accelerator does anything. the car is a 1500 vs with autochoke. before i start butchuring the carbs for faults.. any clues?

4000 rpm is a bit high for it to simply be incorrect idle speed - are you sure that the auto choke isn't sticking?

Check that the throttle cable is sitting in its sheath properly and not getting caught on anything. Also check that the throttle linkage return springs are doing their job (and are acutally there).
