I have a mk 1.8 HLX with the 6 speaker surround. I want to replace the rear speakers with some decent direct replacment ones so I dont have to make or buy a stealth shelf. what size are th OE ones and what speakers can you recommend? Cheers,
DanZ

OE ones!!! Although I do have 2 12" Rockfords in the boot (800W Each). I have the right rear speaker missing as it blew (not my fault!) so i need some replacements.

13cm will fit directly into the holes but TBH I wouldn't bother.
I'm sure i'm not the only one who, since installing decent front comps and disconnecting my afermarket rears, haven't noticed any missing sound from the rear at all.

Save the £50 quid you'd spend on them and uprate the fronts with some nice components - you'll never look back (pun intended! :) )

Re: Untitled

Upgrade the fronts first, I have no rear speakers in my car.

Re: Untitled

Nice one boys, thanx 4 the advice, can you suggest some good from components? under £150.

Re: Untitled

What are your musical tastes, what head unit do you have and are you willing to do some mods to the door and door card?

Re: Untitled

I'm into Hip-hop and RnB mostly but I do like drum&bass aswell. I didnt really want to mod anything to be honest tom. Just want an easy direct replacment jobby. Recommendations for the doors AND the rear please (I know you've said dont do the rear but I do like the whole surround thing + they need replacing anyway as one is missing!)

Re: Untitled

Oh and I got a Sony CDX 730 I think it is?! It's the active black one which flips over, bought it a yr ago now, should probably update :D

Re: Untitled

dude if your head unit has the features and you buy some comps for 150 then you can get a front sound stage that will NOT require any rear fill - spend it all on front bro - you wont regret it. as for speakers go to caraudiodriect and check out the MB quart DSE 6.5in comps or the Genesis profile 6.5in comps - they will do the job very nicely! dont forget sound deadening for the front doors tho and what amp have you got if any for driving them?

Re: Untitled

I've got about 150 to spend on the front and 100 on the rear, no amp either!

Re: Untitled

Easy install limits you to 13cm all round, not much bass from them though.

I'd go for these up front:

At the back maybe these:

Never heard them but CDT are supposedly quite good.

You will need some adapters to fit the fronts and its worth getting some sound deadening.

Get 2 packs of the deadening. 1 sheet on the inner part of the door where the speaker screws on and 1 sheet behind the speaker on the door skin itself.

Re: Untitled

This may have been asked before, and I apologise if it has but if the amp is in the boot then where is the best place to run the speaker wire from the amp to the Front speakers? Also how much of a job is it to fit front components into the standard holes with the crossover etc?
