The strut mount on my 500X is dinging. I presume it is that anyway. Its very rusty in there and i don't think those bolts are coming off in one piece.

Any idea where i can get new bolts?

What chance i can get away with replacing just the strut mount and not the whole strut? Will the droplink need changing?

The springs don't look original and have been replaced at some point, but the strut looks original.

I've made a start. The rusty bolts have moved, i'm surprised given how the thread has disintegrated, but i used lots of penetrant and wire brush. Its going to be slow, i can tell. I'm using Fiat E-learn which leaves a lot of gaps!

I imagine the strut or droplink will die after they're removed so i'll be ordering more parts and waiting. Just aswell i'm not in a rush :)

So its gone a lot worse than i'd hoped...i dropped one of the tools onto the windscreen and cracked it. There's a somewhat large stone chip visible from the outside and a crack lower down visible from the inside.

I presume this is repairable, (not by me), how much? Any good companies you know of?

Windscreen repairs are usually for stone chips and consist of applying a suction cup over the chip, vacuuming out as much air as possible which then lets the glue get sucked deep into the cracked/chipped area. That's going to be very difficult from what I see in you picture, because it's right at the edge. Maybe a specialist can though?

I don't think i can do it, so i'm not going to try! At least it can be done at home, i reckon anyway.

Yes that’s £100 through insurance, probably double or triple that then. Can’t really think of a way around it as you don’t normally get second hand screens anymore as they’re near on impossible to remove without damaging due to the excellent bonding properties of modern screens

That's a bit of bad luck. I recently tried a DIY on a crack using a syringe kit from AliE.... Waste of money & time.

There are some videos on youtube that make it look so easy. But of course its only easy on youtube or if you have experience. I'd have little chance of fixing this, perhaps none!

Did you pay someone to repair it? Or replace the whole windscreen?

Might have a go at fixing it myself. What's the worst that could happen? Lol
It’s a safety thing as well though, windscreens provide vital strength in the event of an accident. If it’s repaired, it needs doing properly. Obviously though it’s your car so your choice which road you go down. I’m the worst for doing things on the cheap so no judgment here 🤣🤠

I can't do it, i know that. I can play around with it before it got scrapped, but thats about it.

After i've done the strut mount i'll get some quotes and see where i'm at.

On the plus side i managed to loosen all of the bolts that i needed to in the suspension. I was surprised by that because some of the bolt threads have completely rusted away. So it looks like replacing the strut mount may be OK, leaving aside the windscreen lol.

Punto windscreens are a lot tougher than this 500X one, i presume modern cars have lighter / less strong windscreens?

It’s just how you catch them, whatever the car, if you catch the screen in the wrong place they’ll crack. Sometimes the biggest stones will bounce off, next day a small stone will give you a stone chip 🤷
