I have had to take my Stilo 16v Dynamic back to the Dealer for the 3rd time ! One of my interior lights in the back would not switch off, I had to resort to taking the bulb out as 1. didn't want to run battery down and 2. not get pulled over the Police.

Anyway Dealership had my car all day and they couldn't find out why the light would not switch off. So they are going to order in a new
ECU !

I dont know about anybody else but I'm thinking this is a bit severe
for a minor problem.

Hi little mo (great name!)

Sorry to hear about your problems. When your dealer says "ECU" they mean the Body Computer.

The Stilo uses the F.L.O.R.E.N.C.E. network philosophy, which basically has the Body Computer controlling a lot of functions, whilst talking to other computers called "Nodes" which perform operations in a certain area (e.g. both front doors have one, the dashboard has one). As the lighting system is controlled directly by the Body Computer, your dealer has wisely chosen to replace it (normally they would mess around trying to fix it using cheaper solutions, e.g. replacing the light, although it's pretty obvious the computer is at fault in this case).

Just be glad you dont have a Peugeot. My brother, who's friend works for a Peugeot supplier, says they've got severe faults with their system, called Multiplexing. Apparantly, unlike Fiat, Peugeot have used just one computer, costing loads more to replace. The Body Computer, since it has fewer jobs to do (thanks to the node delegation) costs around £180.

Hope you found some of that interesting.

Lol, comes from my bordom resulting in me reading the Stilo's Service CD, with pages of this stuff. It's a sort of "Teach yourself Stilo Guide" :D.

But yeah, it is quite interesting.

Hi rroope

Your information was very helpful :)

The car is booked in for next Tuesday.

Hi All.

I got my CD from ebay. I'm only on 56K, so I'll take years to put on the web. Oh how I wish I had broadband . . .

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man...

Got called by Fiat Garage, they said due to the nature of replacing the ECU there are some security checks and that they cant fit the ECU today, but possibly tomorrow or sometime this week ! I cant get it fixed next week as I'm working 2 - 10:30 pm.

Well I didn't get called Tuesday so I assumed the car would be
booked into today. Oh now, the ECU hasn't been delivered and
that the car was booked in for Thursday. mm nice of someone
to call me. So now I have to wait until part comes in and
Dealer calls me.

I wonder if this is a familar scenrio to others :)

Hi rroope, great info on stilo is it from a CD manual or service news CD.
Sorry to correct you but the network on stilo is called Mini Florence, it is a 3 speed multiplexing system with high and low speeds a one called Abus.
The security problem with body computer is because this is the unit that holds info on your coded keys and is ordered up by chassis number to match your own car.

Hi david75

No probs, at least WE are accurate, unlike our FIAT friends. And they say us halfords employees are monkeys! (well it was our head-office that did those S**T ads).

Since our great Stilo's can run at at speeds of >1MBps (on the fast CAN line), I wonder if those with the Abarth could put Windows XP on their cars? :p:p:p

Imagine... "Throttle Body.dll has caused a fault. Would you like to send an error report to FIAT?" Poor FIAT wouldn't know what to do with themselves!

Hi rroope
No doubt if it were possible it would just be another electrical fault to deal with, like fiat would get this to work.
But seriously the next big thing in fiat's workshops is the examiners going online so the guys at fiat can work your cars diagnostic lines remotely.
This is a big step in the right direction, it's worked really well for other manufacters who have done it for years.
