All,

Now that winter is well and truly gone, for the last few washes of the 500 I've been thinking of waxing it again. Unfortunately, after the winter it is covered in specks of tar, stuck on "crud" (very small bumps of stuff) and it's got little rust flecks in the paint (the ones all white 500s get- not actually rusting through!) Fly spatter on the front end is really starting to kick in again also.

So, I've been trying to remove the tar and crud using some tar remover and a microfibre. Problem is it seems exceedingly slow (although with enough rubbing with the mf it comes off nicely), and obviously the rust won't come out with it. I don't want to wax it until I get it all off/out.

My questions are;

Are all tar removers slow or have I bought some rubbish?
and-
Can I clay off tar and the crud (I know it'll shift the rust specks, and the insects usually come off with a good mitten wash) or should I persevere with the tar remover?

And if anyone has a good claying guide that'd be good too (y)

Autoglym tar remover works a treat, but I seemed to go through it quite quickly. Clay I don't think will work on it as it's more for picking up particulate crud. There was a good video going around on claying but I'm at work so can't look for it just now.
 
Hi, I use parafin to remove road tar on a old cloth, but give the car a good wash afterwards.
 
If you are using the AG tar remover put it into a spray bottle, spray on, stand back and then wipe off a minute later.

If you are really having issues with it then pick up some tardis - again, spray on, watch the dar dissolve down the panel and wipe off.

Might take a couple of hits with either product and it will be worth then claying and at lease cleansing if not polishing before topping up with LSP of choice.
